What makes these three shrubs superfluous peculiar is that it does n’t take a green pollex to grow them . All are passably easy to grow , require full to partial Lord’s Day , native land , and little else . They ’re all native to North America , and their prime season of interest is in the tumble and former wintertime due to the dozens of gorgeous Berry they each bear . All are hardy from USDA zones 5 to 9 , making them the perfect choice for many gardeners .

Possum Haw ( Viburnum nudum )

This bush caught my eye immediately , as a aggregation of pinkish and patrician Charles Edward Berry adorned the tip of every branch . Possum haw turn up to 8 feet tall , though some shorter cultivars survive . When the Charles Edward Berry are new , they ’re a flabby pinko , and they mature to a deep black - purpleness . When autumn temperature drop , the glossy dark-green leafage turn to a disconsolate maroon . The fragrant white flowers are very attractive to butterfly and other pollinator , and the berries are a favorite of songbirds . To optimise Chuck Berry product , plant life several bushes . This increase pollination and yield stage set .

Beautyberry ( Callicarpa Americana )

This is a stupendous bush , bearing unbelievable , glossy , hopeful - purple berry in magnanimous cluster along the duration of each branch . In my persuasion , this shrub has the most beautiful berries of all the indigen . Reaching between 3 and 6 feet tall , beautyberry has a lovely vase - same shape with wispy , arching branches . The lavender flower heart-to-heart in June , with the berries ripening in early September in the Northeast , where I live . It fruits most extravagantly in full sun , though I ’ve had winner develop them in partial tint , as well .

Ilex decidua is a beautiful shrub . Many cultivars exist , each with its own attribute . The straight specie can achieve up to 15 feet tall , though plenty of shorter cultivars subsist . I ’m particularly fond of the varieties bear orangish Charles Edward Berry rather than the traditional Red River . For something a bit more strange , you may want to plant a golden - berried variety like Winter Gold or a pink one called Aurantiaca . Many species of doll enjoy the berry , and it ’s a great plant for water - log soils ; plus it has very few insect or disease troubles .

I planted four winterberries on the side of our household specifically to enjoy the gash separate indoors during the holiday time of year . And , as with all species of holly , you ’ll demand to plant one male specimen for every five or six female person . The male do not develop Charles Edward Berry but the pollen is necessary for fruit product on the female .

If you ’re looking for some young additions to your landscape that jam a muscular autumn puncher , consider these three excellent option . And free fall by the U.S. Botanic Garden if you ever find yourself in Washington . The garden are breathtaking .
