garden

Border Patrol is a monthly series in which I take a footfall back , or endeavor to , to look at the borders overall . What works , what am I happy with , what could do with a refresh , what is a mess , that eccentric of thing .   It is also a handy record of the gardening twelvemonth and interesting to equate to old year .

Rear Garden

Let ’s start with the overhead shot , have by a avant-garde trapeze creative person .   Overall there is still plenty going on , with good colour in places .

The Patio Border – This border is still the star of the show in the back garden . I ’m pretty glad with it . I ’m a little worried about the cercis canadensis which is now a piffling inundate , a victim of my cavalier attitude to plant spacing . In fact , there are several plants which have more or less disappear in this jumble . Somewhere in there are some imperata cylindrica red baron grasses , crocosmia and some nice repeated viola . Hopefully I can deliver them and move somewhere else . On the right , either side of the ricinus ( 3rd photo ) should be some tall aster which I signify to punch that gap height - wise . My poor supporting has meant they have flopped over so wo n’t be performing quite as desire . Something to watch over out for next yr . I must also remember to take some basal cutting of the asters in the bound .

The Sunny moulding   – The cotinus is develop queerly this year . The only thinG I am aware of being different this twelvemonth is I rationalise it back less strongly , leaving more of the model . It is very uneven now and not specially attractive . Its days may be number . I think I want to freshen the bedding dahlias . I grew this pile from seed a few years ago . The monarda is also disappear . The rose and clematis have been less telling than I hoped , although right than last year . I think I will add some annual climbers to join them on the fenceline . They have been very dear in the front garden , more on that later on .   speak of climbers , I notice some isolated bindweed has escaped my attentions . Does n’t matter how much of it I dig up in the spring …

The Wisteria Border ( incorporating the Eye of Sauron ) – this is a game of two one-half . I ’m still fairly happy with the young delimitation surrounding the Eye , but the original wisteria border is still looking sparse since the poppy were removed . As each month run I recall more and more that I need to re - plant this arena , encouraged by the success of the Patio Border this year . I have plenty of small plants , plus no doubt I will pick up more in the closing of season sales . One affair for me to bear in psyche , this border is now fairly shaded . The wisteria is now highly vigorous , plus there is an element of shading from the other side of the Eye .

The Lilac Border – I still call up there is room to stuff more plant in here . I have some astrantia that might be happier in here . I shall have a think over the next few months . There is a decent clump of aster ‘ niggling carlow ’ which is not yet blossom , no doubt that will improve thing .

The Shady Border – There are a few sparse domain of this border , but otherwise it is pretty obtusely planted , what with the bush and various underplanting . If I was set forth from scratch I might interchange it sweeping but I ca n’t be rile to move out the big shrubs . Having said that , the cornel is in conference with the cotinus in the Sunny border , growing very tardily this year for some rationality . I am sure I could have more interesting shadowiness liberal plant in here , so perhaps I do need to have a re - think . No precipitation .

The Hibiscus Border – The hibiscus is miss in action , hidden behind the genus Rudbeckia and helenium . To sum up insult to injury I opine it flowered while I was on vacation . Perhaps I want to rename the border . I might tinker with this boundary line over the winter , and it could definitely stand to have some bulb inserted , but otherwise I ’m happy with how the extension has turned out .

The Side Alley – I really necessitate to screen out out the irrigation . The planter on the sunny side dry out pretty quick , plus I mistrust vine weevil , so one or two of the plantation owner are seem reasonably sorry for themselve . Even the usually hummer proof clematis montana . I will have to investigate nematode next year . Still , the overall gist is still positive , much nicer than the bare walls of past .

Front Garden

Another highlight for me this class , the front garden has a pleasingly stuffed look just now . The carefully planned and surface way of life has all but disappeared among the expanding plant . I ’m in particular proud of with the fenceline where the annual climber are doing a good task covering the fence . There are several roses and clematis along there too , fresh this twelvemonth , but they are yet to make their presence feel in any meaningful way . I will definitely do more one-year crampoon next yr , and no doubt I ’ll dabble with the planting , but overall I ’m a happy camper . I concede to a modicum of pride when I becharm passersby break to have a gander at the front garden . It was mostly lawn a couple of old age ago , and skinny with it . A vast melioration , gold stars for me , and the bees agree .

I ’ll be back next month for another Border Patrol .
