Amassing a collection of cacti and succulents
Hey GPODers !
A new editor in chief is at the helm of Garden Photo of the Day , and I want to take the opportunity to ( sort of ) formally premise myself . My name is Kaitlyn Hayes , and I ’ve been working withFine Gardeningbehind the scenes for several years in digital content production — though you may have picture my name pitter-patter across the website or gracing the Page of the magazine here or there .
I arise up around women who loved to garden . I spent most summersdeadheading annualswith my mom or picking the biggesttomatoesfrom my grandmother ’s beds . I ’ve always contain a great discernment and love for plants large and lowly , but I also always say that the immature thumb in my family line must have pass over a generation . Year after twelvemonth I would try out to keep all variety of plant alive , but with no success . I gave up promise of enjoying my own gardening endeavor until I began work atFine Gardeningand , with a new wealth of knowledge , decided to give plant another go .

This was also around the same time that I corrupt a camping bus van and started take months - long trips across North America while I was working remotely . These two worlds collided , which led me to my newfound beloved ofcactiandsucculents . Their small - maintenance motive and the many varieties that are slow originate allow me to take my dark-green treasure on the route while check they ’ll survive and wo n’t outgrow my limited space .
With that being enunciate , I ’ve promptly gather a collection that is grow beyond camper - caravan capacity . Below are just some of my favorites , novel and old . If anyone is concerned . . . they ’re mostly well behaved , and I could really use a plant baby-sitter !
Crassula‘Baby ’s Necklace ’ – a new gain that has speedily become my latest fixation . The trailing , buirdly foliage is so much more interesting than string - of - bone ( Curio rowleyanus , syn . Senecio rowleyanus ) or Burro’s - tail ( Sedummorganianum ) ( in my opinion ) , but they ’re ten - times more hardy and wo n’t drop to the base with the slightest touch .

A shot of ‘ Baby ’s Necklace ’ from above captures the deep gloss that emerges on the tips of some leaves .
I ’ve had this silver sea onion ( Ledebouria socialis ) for a few years now and it stay a favorite . I was directly intrigued by the above - ground bulb when I first buy the plant , and it stays at the top of the inner circle for the many tiny flowers that bloom every individual twelvemonth .
A close up of some of the flyspeck flower on showing this year .

I do it recycling and use unconventional containers for my indoor flora , and sometimes the container helps a plant become a new favourite . This pencil cactus ( Euphorbia tirucalli ) jibe perfectly in an old candle jar . After very cautiously practice some holes in the bottom with a diamond - tippytoe drill bit , it became the sodding habitation for this peculiar plant .
Bear ’s manus ( Cotyledon tomentosa ) is a new increase that I ca n’t help poking at all day . I ’ve never been so tempted to hold a bear ’s paw until I commit a exigency to one of these blurry , succulent leaves . The endearing pinkish duck I was able-bodied to pot it in does give it some fillip pointedness , but the unbelievable increase its had over just a few months would have had it at the top of my tilt either way .
Honorable reference to some of my tough warriors : Snake plants , a money Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree ( Pachira aquatica ) , and ladyfinger cactus ( Mammillaria elongata ) . I ’ve had these plant life the longest and all have survived various methods of abuse and carelessness ( AKA pull through the foresighted drives from Connecticut to Vancouver and back ) .

And my terminal feature for today is an golden oldie , but goodie . My old man cactus ( Cephalocereus senilis ) never fails to put a smile on my face . Everyone should have at least one plant life that looks as kooky as it go .
