When connecting your home to the landscape, the right plants and the right design make all the difference
When I first visited this holding in the wintertime of 2010 , I was immediately smitten by the site , and the possibilities began to pick up in my creative thinker ’s center . My client had build a beautiful , contemporary home in a clearing , with wide opened views to the surrounding woods . The house is surrounded by a productive blueberry bush farm , pastures for livestock , and outbuilding to support the farm .
Big properties call for big ideas , and all too often they demand big budget for implement a princely concept . Over the next several class , we were capable to facilitate this magical transformation without elaborate and expensive hardscape change to the site . We did this by letting plants take center stage .
From that first sojourn , the lines of the house have been very reminiscent for me . From the upper deck , I feel as if I were perched at the bow of a ship moving full steam forward into the unwarranted , natural space .

The centerpiece of the garden , what I call the contemporary hayfield , is deposit behind and below the family . see from above , it became the prevailing concept for the entire garden . Our plan called for a naturalistic garden that would sync to the wide open spaces while give a nod to the contemporary lines of the home . By reverberate these lines onto the garden , they became a grounding influence and the centralized theme that brought a sense of order and cohesion to the overall garden .
Know your lines
The “ sustenance lines ” make by the arrangement of plant not only connect the house to the landscape , but it also adds a unparalleled elan given the garden ’s naturalistic surroundings . Using enceinte routine of the same or alike flora also helps keep sustenance to a minimum .
Early on , I con that my client loved the feel and feel of grasses . This was a bang-up find , because they were a perfect mate for the Book of Job at hand . We set out to make a garden with bare hardscape , using gravel path and steel border to define the personal line of credit of the garden . In addition to being budget favorable , gravel made sensory faculty because of its organic , casual vibration .
The warm lines of the central way of life are echoed by a subset of the plant that we used to create livelihood occupation . For exemplar , a hedge of ‘ Midwinter Fire ’ dogwood ( Cornus sanguinea‘Midwinter Fire ’ , Zones 5 - 8) moulding a long section of the track . Although perhaps most loved for its scrim of fiery stems in winter , ‘ Midwinter Fire ’ creates a sturdy backcloth that reenforce the linear theme . In another area , a fringe of blue fescue ( Festuca glaucaand cvs . , Zones 4 - 8) creates a footer for the exuberant mingle of perennial that are backed by a line of ‘ Morning Light ’ miscanthus ( Miscanthus sinensis*‘Morning Light ’ , zone 5 - 9 ) , and at the very back , a dense hedge of our native California lilac ( Ceanothusspp . and cvs . , Zones 4 - 10 ) signals the edge of our cultivated garden .

Creating a garden of this size of it requires a diligent showing process . We emphasized achieving that magical and often problematical balance of eminent - impact , down - maintenance , and multiseason good looks : the holy Holy Grail of garden fashioning . plant life need to eliminate muster on their own before becoming candidates for the overall palette . More important than include the tardy and greatest was choose industrial plant that would perform . As a final result , the garden admit a number of quite common plants .
There are several good reasons for being candid to including common flora in your strategy . They ’re reliable , predictable , and practical — that ’s why they ’re common . Also , when you use a large measure of a unmarried plant , there will always be some that do n’t make it , and leaving gaps detracts from the whole . Common plant are widely grow , so they ’re pronto available , allowing you to punch in any necessary replacements chop-chop , easily , and inexpensively . Sometimes that means that they ’re not patently remarkable — but paired with the right pardner , they can shine .
From this perspective , we came up with a finite and carefully curated palette of works to populate the three master section in the garden : the entry garden , the woodland garden , and the contemporary meadow . As one moves through the garden , some works are repeated from one section to the next , a signal to the continuing thread .

Plants take for their foliage or recollective season of interest leave a human body for the unfolding perennials . In the woodland section of the garden , bands of ‘ Duke Gardens ’ plum yew ( Cephalotaxus harringtonia‘Duke Gardens ’ , Zones 6 - 9 ) provide a sturdy skeleton for showy plume of purple candle astilbe ( Astilbe chinensis‘Purpurkerze ’ , zone 4 - 8) and buttons of ‘ Hadspen Blood ’ astrantia ( Astrantia major‘Hadspen Blood ’ , zone 4 - 9 ) .
We keep the overall pallet of plants as small as we could while accomplish the effect we desired . How the garden was survive to be maintained was a top thoughtfulness , so I chose fewer plant life for the client to learn and understand . While crushed maintenance was a top priority , we approached the design with eyes wide open , knowing full well that no garden is “ no sustainment . ”
Due to our proximity to rude region , we avoid plants with known regretful habit , and any that might launch the risk of becoming invasive were not considered . Daily fussing was n’t rifle to fall out , so we did n’t let in any plants that require deadheading , staking , or any high - touch coddling . We embraced the conception of aging - in - place for the green goddess and perennials in our palette , pick out plant for the poise they exhibit in their ageing . Perennials , such as the coneflowers and sedum , and the great belt of grasses are allowed to age naturally — seed head are lead in place . The reward is that some of the garden ’s most memorable moments take home in late fall as the low , fading brightness level shed light on the grasses from behind .

We adjudicate that plant require seasonal maintenance blitzes were satisfactory . For instance , some tasks , such as cutting back the big grasses , are substantial job . But when viewed through the lens that these are done once a yr and are the type of project you could get help with , they become palatable .
To maintain balance between the perennial participant , some postulate to be check , others encouraged . For example , ‘ Firetail ’ persicaria grows quickly and has a tendency to push out the more demure members of the palette , so it ’s regularly divide to allow enough space for others to thrive .
Imposing this discipline does n’t mean closing the doorway to options . For example , though we used a phone number of different grasses , once you get the hang of caring for one , you cognise the drill for the rest period . We used expansive belt of Nipponese wood grass ( Hakonechloa macra , zone 5 - 9 ) , but we select two varieties : the unbowed species and the cultivar ‘ Aureola ’ ( Hakonechloa macra‘Aureola ’ , Zones 5 - 9 ) for dissimilar effects . Using the halcyon ‘ Aureola ’ in the big , lawn - like belt would have been too much : too showy , too yellow . But the square species dead take what we were going for — a serene , flowing ocean of green that moves with the breeze . In another surface area , masses of yellow light source up the timber floor . Two grasses , same fear regime — this allowed us to accomplish effects that are like but not the same .

The garden has become a source of joy for my clients and all those who visit . A stroll through is an immersive experience , allow one to enjoy the plantings up near and to commune with the many bee , butterflies , and bird that are frequent visitors . Viewed from above , the underlying pattern that connects home , garden , and the natural context allow them to coexist in a beautiful and cohesive way . This well - specify outline , these repeat industrial plant , and a logical colouring material story create a continuing thread . The line of the garden booster cable , and our hearts travel along .
Common plants, uncommon beauty
In the lower garden , a wide-eyed but effective tapestry of four flowering perennials carry on the color report begun by the woodland perennial with their tone of pinkish , purple ( light and saturated ) , and blueish . Taken as a whole , they represent a pleasing change in bloom shapes : daisylike peak of the coneflower ; mess of simple five - petal flowers from the geranium ; crimson spires of the persicaria ; and dense , rounded clusters of the sedum .

The same is true of the grasses in the contemporary meadow (below, right), where they truly shine late in the season among perennials that also age gracefully.
