“ I initiate develop sweet potatoes a few years ago . My first experimentwas a rather successful one . I purchased an oriental sweet potato from an Organic Farmers Market and just put it in the ground and watered it .

Once it get going to germinate I clip off some cuttings ( I didn’tunderstand what slips were at that compass point ) ,   took off most of the leavesand   dug those cuttings into the territory in a niche of my yard covered inmulch . 5 - 6 months later I had a 5 gallon bucket full of Sweet potatoes . I thought I was in heaven and could n’t believe everyone was n’t growingsweet potatoes .

Since that time I have been chevvy with bad crops .

Sweet potato problems? Let’s see what we can do!

After that first crop I dug some base compost into that corner of theyard and come out again . The vine mature like crazy but eventually becameinfested with white fly . When it come time to harvest there reallywasn’t much in the ground . Just tiny little   or long weedy one on theroot . Last Spring I used some of those same small sweet potato tostart skid from a jar . The skid grow slap-up . The first ones were putinto a grow cup of tea in March , which in South Florida is somewhat tender as youknow . I also have some plant in raised bed and they are nowcompletely infest with clean flies . It was from that first bagful that Iharvested today . I have a few theories / ideas :

2 . Starting from small potatoes….would that have anything to do with it . I just figured it did n’t matter as long as I had a shimmy or cut tostart with .

3 . I thought my second crop was so pocket-sized because I had mixed in compost that had Chicken Manure in it and the N stimulate me to get alot of vine growth but little potato outgrowth . This would not be true of this twelvemonth ’s craw because I got free of the chicken 18 months ago and there is no longer any chicken manure in the compost that was added to the grow bags .

4 . Does pruning the vine get less potato growth . I have been trimming them back when they grow into base on balls ways etc . and append the cuttings to the compost bin . I did not do that for the 2nd crop though and had the same result .

Any thoughts or cognition would be appreciated . Feeling frustrated after waiting 6 months and thinking there were potatoes growing in there . ”
