In a Vase on Monday. End of Year Flower Count.
Each year on Christmas Eve I do a bloom reckoning and see how many different blooms there are to piece to for the Christmas table . This twelvemonth I am doing it for the New Year ’s Eve table instead as the Pianist and I were too full of colds to trouble with flowers for Christmas . Cathy at Rambling in the Gardenusually does hers on Boxing Day , hereis her gilded total for this year . It is interesting how it varies from class to year according to how many unseasonal hangers on or precocious saltation blooms there are . This year although it is quite modest there are rather skimpy pickings as apart from rose there are few mess about summertime blooms .
I used a Wedgewood silver lustre jugful to give a chip of seasonal sparkle . Here is what I find .
And here is the leaning .

1.Lonicera purpusii ’ Winter Beauty ’ ( Winter Honeysuckle.)2.Jasminum nudiflorum.(Winter Jasmine.)3.Hamamelis x intermedia . ‘ Livia ’ . ( Witch Hazel)4.Viburnum tinusViburnum farreriViburnum bodantense‘Dawn’5.Chimonanthus praecox6.Prunus subhirtella‘Autumnalis’7.Skimmia rubellaSkimmia‘Kew Green’8.Sarcococca hookerianumvar . digyna9.Mahonia x media‘Winter Sun’10.Clematis‘Freckles’11.Galanthus‘Three Ships’12.Cyclamen coum13.Helleborus orientalis‘Phoebe’14.Erica carnea‘Springwood White’15 . Chrysanthemum16 . Erysimum ‘ Bowles Mauve’17 Pansy18.Rosa viridiflora19 . Rosemary
Although there are unlike kinds of skimmia and genus Viburnum and I have different variety of hellebore in bloom that does n’t weigh , so I only tolerate one for hellebore , one for genus Viburnum and one for skimmia . To make the list complete I should have included one of my short ‘ Cedric Morris ’ daffodils but I could n’t bear to pick it . Still , I am proud of with my posy and it has several fragrant flowers so it is nice to snuff . Last class ’s vase ishere . There were 29 prime , so quite a lot more but every year is different .
Thank you Cathy for hostingIn a Vase on Mondayand getting me outside looking for blooms . I revel my prowl and pick up the nose of so many bulbs to follow . And even when the garden looks barren there are always treasures to find if you see hard enough .

This is a wonderful exercise . I always “ see ” less in my garden than there probably really is . What a range of a function of blooms you have ! I ’m sorry you and the pianist suffered through colds over Christmas and I hope you ’re feeling up to sniff now . Best wish well for a happy unexampled year !
What exquisite treasures in your vase this week Chloris . The variant in number from class to year is intriguing . I ’m not surprised that you could not bring yourself to behead one of those little daffodils . I hope that you and The Pianist are well on the route to convalescence .
