My name is Angela O’Brien - Ruff , and I experience in Seattle , Zone 8b . I have contributed to GPOD a couple of time over the last few years.(Check out her previous articles here , oneandtwo.)We have thawed out from a nearly 8 - inch snow that came at the end of December , and as I survey some of the damage around my garden I enquire how and if some of the works will emerge in the leap . Below are a few picture of our garden from last yr . I have essay to let in botanic names where possible .
I confess to having many failures on this sliver of space on the Frederick North side of our house . However , this new combination of planting seems to be happy here . The pavers are Montana argillite and stones salvaged from my neighbour ’s thou redevelopment . The Otto Luyken were originally belittled , one - gallon plant life that have outgrow their stated matured height , but they are a welcome mint in the wintertime with their dark , evergreen folio . A fellow gardening friend give me thesesweet pea(Lathyrus odoratus , annual ) seeds she saved from her garden . I love the fragrance and colour but did not know the name . Thanks to an article in the February 2022 subject ofFine Gardeningmagazine , I ’m jolly certainly these are ‘ Indigo King ’ .

Nothing can lift my tone on a cold February day more than a bouquet ofhelleboreblossoms drift in a bowl . The bootleg ones areHelleborusWinter Jewels , ‘ Slate Double ’ . The pure clean one tinged in raspberry isHelleborus‘Spring Bright ’ . I ca n’t identify the green and royal ones .
Camelliasasanqua‘Apple Blossom ’ ( Zones 7–9 ) with beautiful pearlescent blossoms in November . It can be a nice evergreen bush or espaliered against a fence .
Amazon lily(Eucharis amazonica)is a tropic lightbulb that commonly arise outdoors in Zone 10 or in high spirits , but I have it off it as a houseplant .

beldame hazel ‘ Jelena’(Hamamelis‘Jelena ’ , Zones 4–9 ) bloom during our recent snow . Most Wiccan hazel are grow for their fragrance , but I was drawn to this one ’s burnt orange blossoms that seem in winter .
I discovered this ginkgo tree(Ginkgo biloba , Zones 3–8 ) in a dealings circle on a walk in the neck of the woods near my house . The dividing line of the lemon tree - yellow leaves against the bright blue sky was arresting .
