Lose the lawn

When we arrived here just over three class ago the garden was in sad need of some tender precaution . My first chore was to get rid of the many purposeless little island beds in the back garden . Then   I release my aid to the front . The garden was bisected by a garden path leading up to the door and on each side was a lawn .   This was besiege by knobbly - kneed roses . R. ‘ Iceberg ’ is quite pretty but these bushes were well past their ‘ Best Before ’ escort .

In front of the white scout fencing there was a pointless comic strip of lawn too . What on world is the usance of a little bits and strips of front lawn ? They had to go .   I dig out them up . Under the lawn was a whole connection of cherry tree tree diagram roots which were monstrously difficult to get disembarrass of .   When I had finished I sit down and thought I might perhaps die . The American garden author , Martha Smith describes the belief in her book ; ‘ bed I have known ’ . There must be so many gardeners who will distinguish with what she call ‘ Planter ’s Paralysis . ’The awful feeling you get when you realise that ‘ you will never , ever rise again’after you have used muscular tissue that you were not aware you had .   Not only did I think that I would never be able-bodied to garden again but I think that I would be welded to my chair for ever or else be condemned to crawl around on my hands and knees to the surprisal of Pip , the dog who though it was some   exciting , new game .

In the post of the strip of lawn in front of the fencing I put my collection of iris diaphragm . Here they can sit and get there rhizomes bake by the sun and do n’t have to compete with anything else for luminance . unluckily they have fall back their labels as I have dug them up and move them several times whenever I strike planetary house . Some of them are Cedric Morris irises . The artist , Sir Cedric Morris lived near here and I have friends who gardened with him . Many gardeners around here maturate his beautiful , delicate fleur-de-lis . I also have quite a few from the wonderful Cayeux iris nursery in France . These are big brazen ladies in sumptuous coloring . I know they miss the elegance of the Cedric Morris ones but I do n’t want all my fleur-de-lis to be refined . Their colours are perfectly gorgeous . They do n’t last long and they need staking as they are so top - backbreaking but I would n’t be without them .   Here are some of my beautiful iris adorn out in their magnificent political party dresses .

Oh , your Irises are so pretty ! I miss the Irises . I ’m not an expert on them though . Most of them reckon to be whiskery sword lily ; perchance some Louisiana Irises ( white , purple , orange ? ) . Some adorable cultivars .

Sorry no idea as to names but they are beauties Chloris !

I might have to donate my irises to you . I do love them but I guess I ask something which bloom for longer . peculiarly considering I have them growing in gage which expect watering most days . What would you suggest ?
