Mad on Magnolias.

I have got a bit behind with blogging ;   the weather has been so wonderful and I have been out in the garden most day   mold until I ’m gabble with exhaustion and not at my sunniest and sweetest advantageously .

But I ca n’t let the Magnolia season sideslip by without posting about them . They   have been wonderful this yr as there have been no Robert Lee Frost to ruin them .   There are so many wondrous varieties that I can not sympathize why everyone growsMagnolia xsoulangeana . It is beautiful but there are three drawbacks to plant this Magnolia . It takes years to   be full tog in flower . Most days April   frosts    turn   the flowers brown . third , everyone else grow it .   Here it is in a neighbor ’s garden .

There were no magnolias in this garden , so first of all I plant my beautifulMagnolia‘Black Tulip ’ . I brought it with me from my previous garden , so it is 5 years old now and flower well . Magnolias do n’t like stem disturbance so I was lucky that it hold up . It blossom the very first twelvemonth that I bought it . It is not actually black , but very dark pink and the flowers are more the shape of water lilies than tulip . But it is gorgeous .

Magnolia‘Black Tulip ’

Lovely as the’Black Tulip ’ is , if I could only have one Magnolia it would probably beMagnolia‘Susan ’ which is the solution of a cross betweenMagnolia liliflora‘Nigra ’ andMagnolia stellata‘Rosea ’ . It is   overcompensate with dark pinkish , scented flower . My Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is only a class old , but here is a motion picture of the one in my friend ’s garden .

I have one of Susan ’s parent in my garden;Magnolia liliflora‘Nigra ’ . My previous garden had been a nursery and there were 23 different magnolia raise in the garden . I layer this one so that I had a young plant to get with me . This is the good and easy path to propagate them . They do bring forth beautiful come some year . A seedling look in my previous garden much to my delight . I wait more than 8 years and at last it flower but it was a entire dashing hopes with tiny white flower .

Magnolia liliflorais later -flowering than many magnolias and I engage these photograph today . The bud is very sullen so you’re able to see how it get its name ‘ Nigra ’ .

I have Susan ’s other parentMagnolia stellatain white . The star magnolia progress to a bush rather than a tree so it is suited for smaller gardens .

Some years ago I visited the late Princess Sturdza ’s magnificent garden , Le Vasterival near Dieppe in France . She grew many beautiful magnolia , but she told me her preferent wasMagnolia‘Star Wars ’ . As she was a nurseryman of gravid judgment I direct her advice and bought this rattling Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . It is tight get and produce its bombastic flowers whilst still young . My Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is 4 year one-time and has 16 flowers this year . ( Do all gardeners weigh their flowers ? ) It come from New Zealand and is a cross betweenMagnolia campbelliandMagnolia liliflora . The chalice shaped efflorescence are roseate - pinko and fragrant .

So until latterly I had these 7 magnolias . And then I had a sudden rush of blood to my head and pull in that 7 is just not enough , so now I have 10 . Please dear blogger Quaker , remind me next year that I have enough magnolia now and I do n’t need any more . I have no elbow room for any more . No more magnolias .

Here are my young ones . Last year I control the beautifulMagnoliaWada ’s Memory ’ in the arboretum at The Place for plant , East Bergholt and I have been want one ever since . It makes a pyramidal form tree and is covered in big , pure livid , fluttery , star - shaped flowers .   It prompt me of a handkerchief Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . When I went in Autumn I notice that the leave of absence had bend Au . My small tree has 2 flowers .

Peter , theoutlawgardenermade me realise I really needed the beautiful yellowMagnolia‘Elizabeth ’ . Clearly no magnolia assemblage is pure without a lily-livered one and it is gorgeous . It has 6 flower   on it . I love magnolia that do n’t keep you hold off for their blooms .

Magnolia ‘ Elizabeth ’

My late purchase was sort as aMicheliauntil recently but now it isMagnolia laevifolia‘Gail ’s Favourite ’ . It is a shrub with dismal greenish leaves which are rust on the bottom . The nice brown , velvety buds open up into masses of sweet smelling , creamy -white flower . It is still in bud , so I will show you what it look like in prime another day .

This post about all your Magnolias was delightful ! I adore Magnolia trees too , but until latterly had none . I buy M. laevifolia last twelvemonth , so far no bloom on it , but it ’s live at least . Just yesterday I found my second Magnolia , a bigleaf Magnolia . So glad you took Peter ’s advice and commence the yellow one ! I know how you experience ab out the weather condition and go hard in the garden , I ’ve been doing that too . At the terminal of the Clarence Day I ’m usually yearn for chocolate , not wine-colored .

Oh gosh , you have a wonderful aggregation . I recognize some of those as varieties include in the local botanical garden ’s video display . I know they have some of the “ sisters”–Elizabeth and Susan , for object lesson . And , of course , M. stellata , which is very common in gardens around here . ‘ Star Wars ’ is wonderful ! I enjoy just about any Magnolia , including soulangeana . But , of course , we have the Robert Frost issues here in the Northern U.S. , too . Again – amazing collection !

Your post has me ask myself why I have n’t try a Magnolia other than the M. x grandiflora I inherited with our current sign . I just flipped through my western garden pathfinder and find a LOT of varieties that will develop here , including a couple of deciduous lily-livered varieties I ’d love to have . Their water neediness and acme has dampened ( no punning signify ) my initial enthusiasm but perhaps the current drought will end in my lifetime and perhaps my tree - averse neighbor will go aside one day .

Magnolia stellata

Magnolia stellata

Gorgeous motion picture ! So many beautiful magnolias , so piffling space . I ’m so glad you get ‘ Elizabeth ’ ! My Magnolia laevifolia is flower profusely ( It ’s first time with me as it was plant last summertime ) and I can often be incur with my nose near those intoxicating flowers! There ’s always room for another magnolia . How about an evergreen Magnolia grandiflora and you ’d have intercourse the huge leaves and gigantic flower of Magnolia macrophylla !

The cartoon catches utterly how I felt after a long wearing mean solar day in the garden .

There is just something quite special about magnolias : the colour , the texture and the scent of the flowers ; the shapeliness of the trees themselves ; the toffee - gloss fall leaves and the furry coats protecting the flowers through the winter . I just have one magnolia stellata but I enjoy it all year around . A bit of welcome pelting here in the south east last dark , which is good news for all my direct sowings at the allotment . But I am not complain about this beautiful outflow , has n’t it been wonderful ?

Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’

Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’

a fantastic collection of magnolias . I would not have elbow room for one in my garden , but have been admire them in other gardens . I really hump the pink one especially ‘ Nigra ’ which is stunning .

I ’m so glad that the atmospheric condition here has turned first wet and then perceptibly cooler here this good afternoon . I ’m not catching up with the housekeeping but with blog meter reading 🙂 I call up that I recollect waxing lyrical about your magnolia last yr Chloris . You have more ! ! ! I quite understand the fatal attraction – they are fabulous when in efflorescence . Is that another one of your daughter in constabulary ’s illustrations ? It made me chuckle .
