Fabulous flowers at a Zen temple
Today Joan K. is taking us on a trip to Kyoto , Japan .
I discover the late postings about peony , so I was animate to send these exposure .
In late April I was in Kyoto , Japan , and claver the Kennin - ji synagogue . Kennin - ji was the first Zen temple in Kyoto . The four sides of one of the tabernacle buildings were surround by the most amazing paeony in full bloom . As a bonus , the temple also has a beautiful dry Zen garden . This is not one of the most famous temples in Kyoto , but it was very near where we appease ; the peonies made it well deserving a visit .

Peonies in full efflorescence . These are tree peonies , which have woody stanch , grow into small shrubs , and blossom earlier than their herbaceous counterparts . Though generally tree paeony are good at holding themselves up than herbaceous peonies , the immense flowers can flag under their own weight . These have been carefully supported using fleeceable stakes that immingle into the leafage .
Tree peony are calledbotanin Nipponese andmudanChinese ( written牡丹in both languages ) . Tree peony have been domesticate in China since at least 500 BC and were introduced into Japan in the 8th C by Buddhist monks . Kyoto became a core for their cultivation , propagation , and breeding .
Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree peonies around the walls of the Zen Buddhist temple . Peonies are a particularly appropriate flora for a Zen temple because one of the key teaching of Buddhism is impermanency — that nothing endure forever , so hold up in and enjoy each present moment . Peonies are great symbols of this , as their incredibly beautiful flowers all too promptly shatter and disappearance , so we have to revel them in the cherished mo when they are bloom .

Atsukubai , or ritual hired hand - washing river basin , at the tabernacle . visitor to the tabernacle rinse off their custody before entering to signify purifying themselves for the experience .
A Zen crushed rock garden , a space of sweetheart and for tranquil meditation .

What a beautiful blank space .
