I got an eastward - mail with some levy bed garden questions a week and a one-half ago from Emily in Ft . Lauderdale … and I ’m in conclusion go to answer it today . ( Sorry for the wait , Emily ! ):

“ Hi David . Hope you ’re doing well … I need to inquire you a couple questions about the garden I build : I had a 7×3″ raised garden build in the terrace . At the bottom of thisemail there ’s a link to where you may see a few photo I took of thegarden this morning . Unfortunately , my roomy and I have both been so busy that it ’s been about 2 months and we have not planted anything yet . So it ’s been neglected – save for the Ananas comosus top I planted a few years ago . I ’m fit to move it to a planter when I get more soil . Is it still OK to plant semen even though the dirt has not been water regularly?I have constituent potting soil top with cow manure top soil . We have abag of wood chip to cover it once we engraft the ejaculate . We also have asoaker hose snake throughout the layer . We can only leave it on for a few minutes or else the seam gets super flooded . We do have a tarpaulin underneath and edit hole in it so it does run out , just not as fast as the water come in . Do you conjecture that would be a problem?I’m provision to plant courgette , Lycopersicon esculentum , spinach , romaine lettuce , bellpepper , cucumber , lettuce and Brassica oleracea botrytis . I also have another planterto industrial plant herbs .   What do you think ? Is it the correct time of year to constitute ? Should I wait? That ’s about it . Thanks for your help ! ”

Here are a few pictures Emily sent me of her bed :

wait at this setup , I ’m not sure you require a waterspout hose . For a single bed , watering by hand every twenty-four hour period or two ought to work well . It also gives you more interaction with your garden , which is a very good thing . Flooding the bed is ok , as long as it enfeeble pretty quickly and does n’t stay soggy.Amazon.com Widgets

I can severalise you this : that pineapple is n’t going to be glad if the bottom perplex lactating for too long . They be given to rot under those condition . Moving it , like you plan to do , is a secure theme .

“ I ’m planning to plant zucchini , tomatoes , Spinacia oleracea , romaine lettuce , bellpepper , cucumber , loot and cauliflower . I also have another planterto industrial plant herbs .   What do you mean ? Is it the right clip of twelvemonth toplant ? Should I hold back ? ”

It ’s the right clip to plant some of those things . Since you ’re in South Florida , you do n’t get the killer heat we do further north . Tomatoes should do quite well right now . courgette and cukes lean to suffer from disease when the humidness of summer hits , so you ’ll want to keep them fertilized and acquire fast so they can hopefully beat those things .

Alexander Bell peppers are tougher , but they also wish the estrus and are deserving a endeavour . I have much better success grow hot common pepper – but they ’re definitely not as much fun to toss in a salad . Unless you flip them into someone else ’s salad .

Other thing to develop in the heat include bush edible bean , corn whiskey , okra andyard - long beans(if you have a trellis for them to develop on ) .

You ’re go to have to await for cool weather to rive off spinach , scratch , lettuce and cauliflower . intend November or so .

Many herbs are tough things that can take some ill-treatment . Rosemary , sage and Basil the Great all do n’t mind the sun . Basil is really easy to grow from semen , too , which will save you buy a plant .

Another matter : I ca n’t secernate what your sunshine exposure looks like . Are you getting lots of blazing sun most of the solar day – or are you in half - refinement most of the time like it appears in the picture ? If it ’s full , blast sun , you may have some trouble . If it ’s too much shade , your tomatoes might not set yield . In between ? Perfect !
