Small nook turned into a seating sphere . We change by reversal a small nook , diametrical , into a seating area by add a shock absorber and pillows . The window boxes are planted with four types of ivy ; the mixing of green leaves draws the eye from the interior to the extraneous universe . We chose a flabby , neutral paint ( Benjamin Moore Historic Color Monterey White ) , which sets a contemplative mood . A beat - up tree stump fromWest Elmserves as a small-scale tabular array . When I propel to New York City from Southern California well-nigh 20 years ago , I miss the well-heeled access to nature I ’d always enjoyed there . Over sentence , though , I became attuned to the ways the natural existence give away itself even in the heart and soul of the urban center — in its roll commons , its abundant James Leonard Farmer markets , its window boxes catch fire with blooms . Still , by the middle of last year , my quaternary - storey apartment in Williamsburg , Brooklyn , and my daily commute on the subway had begun to feel stifling . It was sentence for a change .
More than anything , the rich sunshine streaming in through the windows first draw my partner , Daniel , and me to the two - sleeping accommodation apartment we eventually buy in Manhattan ’s Gramercy Park locality . We bonk the architectural detail that remained in our new home , which was built in 1901 , but many had been scour clean over clock time . Most of the flat ’s original molding had been remove , so we installed check segment in lieu where it was missing . We find 100 - year - old lighting fixtures appropriate to the era and overall aesthetic . The previous owner had laid down contemporary bleached bamboo floor , which we replaced with white oak rescued from a barn in Virginia .
Choosing Containers

Garden Design ’s style music director , Lindsey Taylor , assembled a selection of modest containers she think might work well in the apartment , include : 1.Jamali Garden’scement urn 2.Campania International’setched Alessio planter 3.Anthropologie’sglazed Ivory Epoch pot 4.Flora Grubb’spalm tree diagram - textured Thai planter 5.Pottery Barn’sgalvanized cachepot 6.Terrain’stin container , part of a set of four that nest in a woven tray 7 . Campo Delaware ’ Fiori ’s Dragonscale planter , cover in live moss that continues to develop over time ( uncommitted fromJayson Home ) 8.Accent Decor’sgreen Market pot 9.Flora Grubb’sridged Cypress vase .

Then we wait — and waited . The beautiful but largely empty apartment that we now called home pall us . We did n’t know what to do next . That ’s when Lindsey Taylor , panache conductor of Garden Design , introduce me to her friend Shane Powers . “ This is exactly the kind of situation he excel in , ” she tell me . A interior designer and editor in chief atMartha Stewart Livingwith an abiding respect for the rude creation , he ’s lick on interiors for clients all over the worldly concern .

For a while the central between Shane and me bordered on the abstract . I abduce a especial piece of pianissimo music by Claude Debussy as being what I want the flat to feel like . Shane responded by due east - mailing images of furniture and decorative elements he felt expressed the same gumption of quiet , comfort , and reflection . At ABC Carpet & Home we found a lounge and chair upholstered in unbleached idle - weave linen . From Tara Shaw Antiques in New Orleans , we bought an old dining table that was refinished with a textured , distressed - whitewash surface . The convergency of old and Modern felt up perfectly in sync .

From the start , Shane knew he want keep industrial plant to punctuate the infinite and resound the leafy treetops visible outside . We put in windowpane box filled with dissimilar Hedera helix in variegate hues that would keep their foliage year - pear-shaped . Two urn sprout serpent works ( Sansevieria trifasciata ) with striking bladelike leaves anchorperson one end of the living room , and a revolve potpourri of different plants and simple arrangements of shortened flush live various corners and surface . We were deliberate not to overdo it : The object was not to produce a garden indoors but to evoke the feeling of being in a garden .

One peculiarly meaningful element grew out of an early group discussion with Shane in which we lay out on a table a aggregation of fragments — leaves , blossom , swatch of material — that reflected the mood and palette we were going for . One of those scraps was an old snapshot I took on the cross - country trip that contain me from California to New York City years ago of a stint of New Mexico desert . We ended up blowing up that shot , put it , and lay it as the focal stage of the livelihood room . The image is nature and the rumination of nature at the same clip , a sherd of the past and a poignant emblem of a new beginning . It is absolutely correct in our home .
Our couch , diametrical , is covered in loose - weave linen paper . We opted for windowpane shades made of likewise textured and hue material , a simple pull - down model in a color calledWheat from Janovic . We bought fabric in New York City ’s way territory and asked a sartor to make pillow covers . All told , each pillow cost about $ 35 .

We put it on a pocket-size silver - colour tray fromJamali Gardento catch any pee spills . Choosing FabricsOne of the most productive moments in the process come whenShane Powers , a designer who helped us contrive our interior , spread out swatches of fabric on a board with leaf from our plants and a photo I took in New Mexico , which we had blow up and now hang in our bread and butter room ( see previous slide ) . have these items on the tabular array made it easy to choose the textile we used to spread over pillows and cushion . exposure by : Todd Coleman
