A few weeks ago my baby Rachel want to know how to work up a simple compost binful she could use for kitchen scraps and fall leaves . I asked if she ’d send me a quick video clip I could hightail it during a Goodstream , then we could have viewers share their thought . She fit , and we had a great show .
compost can be as unproblematic as throwing organic material on the ground , as I drop a line inCompost Everything : The Good Guide to Extreme Composting , or it can be more complicated , with balancing ratio of carbon and nitrogen and regular turning and attempts to uphold a pile within a certain temperature range .
For Rachel ’s backyard , complicated was out – but so was just throwing things on the primer to rot . She necessitate a small decree and she needed a near spot to turn back the compost , so she build a simple pallet compost bin .

Here are the pallets , quick to go :
And here they are partially assembled :
And here they are finished :

An old kitty litter bucket can be spray-painted and used to collect kitchen scraps for the compost pile
That is a good - bet compost bin . Almost a 4′ x 4′ x 4′ , which is a good space .
Here ’s my sister after adding the first one shot of compostable materials :
Good job , Rachel !

Note that to the bottom justly there is a square black bucket . That is a cat bedding material container that my sister is using for a kitchen compost container .

She spray - paint it black so she did n’t have a garishly colored kat litter pail sitting in her kitchen .

This size bucketful is corking for a family composting system . You simply throw in your kitchen scraps and spoiled leftovers , your used newspaper towel and paper crustal plate , your leftover haircloth from haircuts and whatever other organic matter cash in one’s chips through the house , then empty the bucket when it ’s full .
I keep a few 5 - gallon bucketful in rotation and will empty them out into my compost pile , then pillory them out with the hosiery , then leave them in the Dominicus for a day or two to sterilize them and cut down on odor , then put them back into kitchen responsibility as needed .
Building a Simple Compost Bin from Pallets
All you take to do to work up a pallet compost bin is to get four palette and shag or postal code - tie them together . That ’s enough to keep great animal from get deep down . Here ’s a multi - bin palette compost pile I built :
If I want to also keep out lowly animals , I could cut and staple hardware material to the inside , and probably put it on the bottom as well , as some beasts will burrow up through .
Generally , though , I do n’t bother . It ’s not worth the drive , as I know in the rural area and a few rats and mouse are n’t a big deal .

Dealing with Compost Pile Odors
I have an epic compost pile I of late establish with concrete block on a slab :
I ’ve been dump kitchen scraps into the first of the three binful and I have to say – you may smell out it from yards away . The material is wet , sloppy and stinky .
There is an easy elbow room to deal with this . All you want to do is to cover with some carbon material , like leaves or shredded newspaper publisher or even bagesse or wood cow chip . The latter take more time to check down but still make large compost .

I like continual bin methods of compost , rather than arranging level as I go and trying to rick on a regular basis and tally double-dyed ratio for fast rot . In real life , most of us just want a post to throw a few kitchen scraps now and again . When you have a bin in the backyard you’re able to just bemuse carrot desquamation in after meal prep , that is good enough . If you have the additional benefit of fall leaves , keep some on hand to address the scraps as you go . This egest odor .
Rachel ’s elementary compost bin is perfect for a backyard – you do n’t postulate anything fancy . A small chip of scavenging and you could quit throwing food scraps in a landfill and start turning them into proficient food for your garden .
Finally , recall you’re able to compost all kinds of intellectual nourishment scraps , not just the ones on the approved composting listing floating around . Meat , bread , fossil oil – give it all in . cut the compost police !
Meat is in reality very well plant nutrient . Do n’t lay waste to it .
If you do n’t have my gratis compost template yet , you canget it here . Thanks for reading .
